Ortho-K for Kids/Teens vs Adults
Ortho-K provides clear vision for children, teens, and adults, and is suitable for people of almost any age. However, our treatment approach varies significantly depending on each patient’s age and vision needs.
Kids/Teens
-
Main Goal: Help slow the progression of myopia to lower the risk of complications later in life; while also providing clear vision without the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses.
-
Design Features: Enhanced "myopia control" zones in a smaller size compared to traditional soft lenses
-
Ideally suited for: children with higher levels of astigmatism which may be out of range for some daily disposable lenses, children participating in water-based sports/activities, sports

Adults
-
Main Goal: Deliver clear & comfortable vision without need of day-time glasses or contact lenses.
-
Design Features: Wider treatment zones and optimized lens alignment to promote sharper, more stable vision throughout the day.
-
Ideally suited for: Adults experiencing dryness and irritation associated with wearing soft contact lenses for long hours during the day. Or those unsuitable for laser vision correction procedures like LASIK, SMILE, etc.

Ortho-K
Designs

Our practice offers several advanced orthokeratology lens designs, including Forge, and WAVE as well as more standard designs like Paragon CRT.
Each design is uniquely engineered to address different vision needs, eye shapes, and treatment goals.
While all three lenses work to gently reshape the cornea overnight for clear daytime vision, they differ in their fitting philosophy, treatment zone design, comfort characteristics, and customization options.
Below is an overview of each design and the key differences between them:

Forge
(EyeSpace)

EyeSpace (aka. Forge) uses advanced Ortho-K designing software to create fully customized overnight lenses tailored to each patient’s unique eyes.
By combining detailed corneal topography and precise digital lens design, Forge allows us to carefully customize and optimize every aspect of the lens fit and visual performance.
From a clinical perspective, the flexibility of Forge Ortho-K technology helps support effective myopia management, improved visual clarity, and long-term eye health. For patients, this means clearer daytime vision without glasses or daytime contact lenses, a comfortable and personalized treatment experience, and a safe, non-surgical alternative to refractive surgery.
EyeSpace lenses are manufactured in Christchurch, NZ so lenses are delivered within a few days.

WAVE lens design tools use corneal topography and spectacle prescription data to create a personalized Ortho-K lens based on individual needs of each patient.
Myopia management demands precision. Therefore in order to create a well-fitting custom Toric or Free Form Ortho-K lens as well as customise the size and location of the "correction zone" and "treatment zones" can be easily modified to achieve optimal results using their dedicated software.
WAVE Night Lenses are manufactured in Perth, Australia.

Our Technology

MYAH Optical Biometry & Corneal Topography
Topcon MYAH offers a comprehensive assessment of your eye features that supports personalized Myopia Management namely optical biometry (axial length), corneal topography and pupillometry.
In addition to myopia management, the Topcon MYAH also incorporates Dry-eye Assessment features to measure blink-rate, tear stability, volume and meibography. These measurements guide recommendations for contact lenses

MYAH & Myopia

Auckland Myopia
Clinic

To manage myopia properly, we need to understand not just how clearly a child sees, but how their eyes are growing over time. One of the most important measurements is axial length, which tells us whether myopia is progressing.
At our clinic, we use the Topcon MYAH system to track these changes accurately. MYAH is designed for both clinical care and research, and its axial length measurements are as accurate and reliable as gold-standard devices such as the IOLMaster 700. This allows us to confidently monitor even small changes in eye growth over time.

MYAH & Dry Eye
Quick, non-contact scan — giving a complete picture of surface health.

What makes MYAH even more valuable is that it does more than just measure eye growth.
MYAH can also assesses the health of the eye surface, including:
-
Tear film stability (dry eye risk)
-
Blink rate
-
Meibomian gland condition
-
Tear volume
-
Cornea and Conjunctival damage (using dyes that stain damaged cells)
This means it can also monitor and explain why adults experience irritation, eye fatigue and inconsistent vision due to tear film instability (dry eye syndrome) from spending long hours on computers and near focused tasks.
The MYAH system provides a wide range of advanced dry eye assessment tools, including non-invasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), Meibomian gland imaging with gland loss analysis, tear meniscus height measurement, blink analysis, and real fluorescein imaging with video capture capabilities.
The NIBUT feature records and plays back the progression of tear film breakup over time, with colour-coded sector mapping based on time percentage for easy interpretation.

NIBUT

Non-invasive tear breakup time
NIBUT provides a better understanding of tear film stability, indicating the likelihood of negative effects on the ocular surface, visual quality, and visual fluctuations.
